The peculiarities of the clinical course of wound healing process depending on the ability of the causative agent to form a biofilm

Abstract. The objectives of the study were to investigate the peculiarities of the clinical course of wound healing process, depending on the ability of the isolated causative agent to form a biofilm.
We examined 83 patients with posttraumatic osteomyelitis in the bacteriological laboratory. Sensitivity of microorganisms to antibiotics was determined with the help of ATB Expression. The ability to form biofilms was assessed by means of spectrophotometry. In order to study the dynamics of wound healing process we evaluated disappearance of edema, hyperemia, and the limitation and disappearance of indurations, infiltrations, accelerated wounds clearance of necrotic tissues, the appearance of granulations and epithelialization beginning.
As a result of the conducted study a statistically significant increase in the time of wound clearance, the appearance of granulations, marginal epithelialization beginning and the length of hospital stay of patients with biofilm was found.
Thus the clinical wound characteristics as well as the length of fever and hospital stay of patients with purulent wounds depend on the ability of the isolated pathogen to form a biofilm.
Key words: biofilm, wound infection.
