Mixed saliva crystal structure of white laboratory rats

Abstract.
Qualitative and quantitative characteristics of saliva crystals of 40 white laboratory male rats were investigated.
Crystallograms were studied by hand without the use of automation, dendrite saliva crystals were described in detail and their differences were statistically grounded. To minimize the subjectiveness of the manual morphological method we suggested the method of mathematical processing of the images of saliva microcrystals of white laboratory male rats. To work out and substantiate the method of mathematical analysis we selected 4 quantitative  and 4 qualitative features. Each of the selected features in accordance with its characteristic equalled from one to four points. Classifying of crystals as this or that type on the basis of selected signs was performed with the use of «Decision tree» algorithm in a set of applied programs RapidMiner 5.2. The differences between crystals were considered to be reliable if p equalled or was less than 0,05 (p<0,05).
In the course of the morphological research features typical of high and low viscosity of saliva were identified. On the basis of the detailed morphological study of saliva crystallograms the existence of nine basic reliably different forms of crystals was mathematically proved.
On the basis of the obtained materials mathematically grounded algorithm to differentiate the main crystal forms of white laboratory male rats was suggested for the first time. It may be used in experimental works in dentistry and other fields of medical science.
In the course of further researches for unification of this method and reduction of its subjectiveness and labour input we suggest to work out specialized computer program to evaluate photographic images of laboratory rats saliva crystals.
