Statins influence on the hormonal blood spectrum and cholesterol content in the adrenal glands of white laboratory rats

Abstract.
Statins are widely used in the practice of cardiology, producing hypocholesterolemic effect in atherosclerosis. However, many pharmacodynamic characteristics of these drugs are still poorly understood. The aim of this study was to investigate the influence of statins on lipid-transport system, the content of thyroid hormones, ACTH, cortisol, testosterone, and the amount of cholesterol in the adrenal glands. Researches were conducted on white male rats weighing 300-350 g. For the research conduction experimental groups were formed: 1. the intact group; 2. the experimental group the animals of which for two weeks were intragastrically administered lovahol and whose blood samples were taken in 7 hours after the last administration of the drug. The levels of total cholesterol, triglycerides, HDL cholesterol in the blood serum were determined with biochemical commercial sets, the levels of thyroid hormones, TSH, cortisol, testosterone and ACTH by means of radioimmunoassay sets. The percentage of  -LP, --LP and pre---LP was determined with sets of HYDRAEL LIPO + Lp (a) Sebia. Cholesterol level in the adrenal glands was determined by Zlatkis - Zak. Statistical analysis was conducted with the use of nonparametric Mann- Whitney test for independent samples, ANOVA and correlation analysis using the Spearman correlation coefficient in the application package STATISTICA 6.0. It has been determined that two-week administration of lovahol decreases the level of total cholesterol at the cost of LDL- cholesterol, significantly affects the dispersion of VLDL, triglycerides and HDL cholesterol, decreases testosterone and T4 levels, increases the level of ACTH with highly significant effect on the dispersion of T3, TSH, and cortisol levels. Besides, lovahol significantly increases cholesterol level of the adrenal glands and modifies the correlation relationship between hormones and values of lipid-transport system.
