Clinical and epidemiological nature of  Chlamydophila pneumoniae prevalence in military units, elaboration of optimal schemes to prevent infection

Abstract.
Objectives. To evaluate clinical and epidemiological features of Chlamydophila pneumoniae infection in military personnel and to develop effective methods of prevention.
Material and methods. In this research patients clinical observation data were studied. Epidemiological, clinical, microbiological, immunological, statistical methods were used.
Results. In military personnel and in persons called up for military service from different areas of the Republic of Belarus infection caused by Chlamydophila pneumoniae is diagnosed. With the use of serological examinations the role of Chlamydophila pneumoniae in the etiology of pneumonias and acute respiratory infections in military personnel has been determined.
In patients suffering from pneumonia caused by Chlamydophila pneumoniae dry, paroxysmal, painful cough and rhinitis are observed more frequently than in those with community-acquired pneumonias caused by Streptococcus pneumoniae and Hemophila influenzae, the overwhelming majority of patients having the normal count of white blood cells, this can be used in early clinical diagnosis and empiric antibacterial therapy.
A scheme of preventing Chlamydia pneumoniae infection in conscripts has been elaborated. Implementation of this antiepidemic measures scheme, including antibiotic prophylaxis of the interruptive type, provides for the reduction in the average monthly incidence of pneumonia and acute respiratory infections among conscripts, and for the increase of the military units protectability.
Conclusions. The obtained results of the study can be used in the diagnosis of pneumonia caused by Chlamydophila pneumoniae as well as in the prevention of this disease in organized groups.
Key words: Chlamydophila pneumoniae, pneumonia, acute respiratory infections, military personnel.
