The study of medicinal plants influence on the thyroid function

Abstract.
To determine thyrotropic properties of 30% tinctures of thallus of Iceland moss (Cetraria islandica) and bady wrack (Fucus vesiculosus), grass of European bugleweed (Lycopus europaeus) and dyer’s greenweed (Genista tinctoria), leaves of little duckweed (Lemna minor) screening studies have been conducted. Experimental studies have been carried out by the standard method «goiter reaction» in intact rats. The duration of the experiment made up 10 days. The effect of all the investigated objects on the synthetic function of the thyroid gland (formation of thyroid hormones – thyroxin and triiodothyronine) both thyreostatic and thyroid-stimulating of different degree and type of action has been established. Thus 30% tinctures of Iceland moss thallus, little duckweed leaves and European bugleweed grass have thyreostatic properties and 30% tinctures of bady wrack thallus and dyer’s greenweed grass possess thyroid-stimulating action.
In general, the experimental studies of medicinal plants carried out by us suggest that further researches are promising and expedient to develop drugs with thyroid-stimulating properties. The investigations are being continued.
