Decomposition and firmness of tablets on the basis of finely powdered herbal substances
Education Establishment "Vitebsk State Order of Peoples’ Friendship Medical University", Republic of Belarus

Abstract.
It has been established that the manufacturing of firm and well-decomposing tablets (meeting pharmaceutical requirements) on the basis of a number of finely powdered herbal substances is possible without additional bonding agents. For example, tablets based on the powders of willow bark, oak, and rhizomes with roots of valerian and Polemónium caeruléum, possessing good decomposition (2...6 minutes) and sufficient firmness (0,8...2,4MN/m2), are manufactured without the use of bonding agents at the pressures in the range from 50 to 150 MPa. In other cases, bonding agents are required.
The application of 6% starch gel as a binder is a technologically advantageous alternative to direct pressing of some finely powdered herbal substances. The use of starch gel in these cases affords an opportunity to obtain at relatively low pressing pressures firm tablets with good decomposition.
Decomposition of tablets, pressed with the use of an alcoholic solution of PVP, as a rule, varies significantly even with a slight difference in firmness. Therefore, to control decomposition of tablets in this case the precise adjustment of the compaction pressure is required.
The application of an alcoholic solution of PVP can be an effective technique that enables the manufacturing of firm tablets with acceptable decomposition, when finely powdered herbal substances are not easily pressed without the addition of bonding agents or with the use of starch gel, as, for example, when pelletizing the powder of  motherwort herb.
The results of the conducted studies show that due to the peculiarities of the structural organization and complex chemical composition the behaviour of finely powdered herbal substances in various technological processes is ambiguous and largely deviates from the normal behaviour of pharmaceutical substances.
Key words: decomposition, firmness, finely powdered herbal substances, tablets.
