The efficacy of the root canal system obturation with the use of handworked and mechanical endodontic instrumentation

Abstract. This paper presents the results of the efficacy evaluation of the root canal system obturation with the use of handworked and mechanical nickel-titanium endodontic instrumentation. The objects of the study were 18 groups of cross sections of extracted human teeth, root canals of which were processed with the use of handworked endodontic instrumentation by the «step back» method and obturated by means of the gutta-percha lateral condensation method.  The comparative group included 18 groups of cross sections of human teeth, root canals of which were processed with the use of mechanical instrumentation («pro taper» files) by the «crown down» method and obturated by means of one dowel method with the use of gutta-percha dowels. The efficacy assessment of obturation density was conducted according to the values of correlation coefficients of the sealer area with the root canal area, pores quantity and the penetration of the painted sealer into the structure of the root dentine. As a result of this study we have found that by means of rotary instruments it is possible to process and obturate the root canal 2 times quicker having given correct cone-shaped form to it, obturation being performed evenly qualitatively  on all length with maximum at apex, less pores and undercuts are observed at that.
