Self-appraisal of dental students educational competence in VSMU

Abstract.
Objectives. To study the indicators of general and special professional competence of future stomatologists – the third-, fourth-  and fifth-year students of the Educational Establishment «Vitebsk State Medical University».
Material and methods. The survey of dental students of VSMU was conducted. We used the survey results of 33 third-year students, 44 fourth-year students and 53 students of the 5th year. Students were asked to make a self-appraisal of the quality of their knowledge of various subjects of social sciences and the humanities, medical and biological sciences, general professional clinical disciplines.
Results. The majority of the surveyed students pointed out a sufficient level of competence in the field of general and general medical sciences. The third-year students gave their knowledge on general disciplines the highest appraisal, and the fourth- and fifth-year students - that on general medical subjects. The obtained results enable the improvement in the process of professional competence formation of stomatologists. The questionnairing of dental students in the process of training helps to determine the subjective attitude of the future doctors to the organization of the educational process in higher educational establishments, to correct drawbacks and to aid the students to acquire necessary competence.
Conclusions. Thus a survey of dental students should be made regularly to explore self-appraisal of future stomatologists competence, this will enable timely reveal of the shortcomings of the educational process and improvement of the quality of education.
