Abstract.
Objectives. To determine the probability of the burnout syndrome development in teachers of higher medical educational institutions.
Material and methods. The study was conducted on the basis of dental faculties of the National Medical University named after A.A. Bogomolets (NMU, Kiev, Ukraine) and Vitebsk State Medical University (VSMU, Vitebsk, Belarus). The persons who agreed to take part in the study anonymously answered the questions of the questionnaire, the basic part of which represents Boyko’s technique supplemented by the authors of this article, taking into account the social and personality status of the subjects. Their responses were assigned a certain number of points according to the phases of the studied phenomenon («Stress», «Resistance», «Exhaustion»).
Results. It has been determined that the «stress» phase is not formed in the significantly larger (by 35%) number of VSMU teachers, and Belarusian colleagues are in the process of its formation 2 times less than the teachers of NMU. In the «resistance» phase there is a different ratio – in the NMU staff this phase is not formed in more than half of the studied individuals and in every third teacher of the VSMU. There are almost 5 times more teachers of NMU in the process of the «exhaustion» phase formation as compared with their VSMU colleagues, i.e. an active development of the burnout syndrome is observed in approximately half of the investigated staff members of NMU.
Conclusions. Teachers of higher medical educational institutions, regardless of the region of their professional activity possess a high probability degree of developing the burnout syndrome with minor deviations of the majority of indices in the studied groups in different phases. This tendency to form the burnout syndrome is characterized by the signs of depersonalization, emotional exhaustion and disruption of professional activity sphere. An inversely proportional correlation between the social aspects of the vital activity of the subjects and the degree of severity of the burnout syndrome is noted.
Key words: burnout syndrome, teachers, higher medical education, competence approach, emotional exhaustion, depersonalization.
