Abstract.
The purpose of the given review is to assess modern, sometimes diametrically opposed, views on simultaneous bilateral total arthroplasty in patients with osteoarthritis of the knee joints, to determine the specific advantages and possible risks of this method, as well as the possibilities and conditions for its use in specialized orthopedic and traumatological departments of the Republic of Belarus. This article contains generalized information about studies on simultaneous bilateral total knee arthroplasty. The main advantages, possible complications, options for practical use of this method, basic indications and contraindications are described.
The relevance of the topic is determined by the high incidence of osteoarthritis with the damage to both knee joints, which in traditional practice requires two consecutive surgical interventions performed at intervals from 3 to 6 months. Nevertheless, taking into account the modern development of orthopedics, constant improvement of the technique of anesthesiological support, simultaneous bilateral total endoprosthesis of the knee joints can be performed in patients who are in need of endoprosthesis on both sides.
Keywords: osteoarthritis, arthroplasty, knee replacement, perioperative management.
