Abstract.
Torque teno virus (TT-virus, TTV) is often found in various tissues of the human body. This virus is widely spread in the population. The role of this virus in the human virome is currently being studied, due to the evidence of lifelong persistence of TTV and a variety of interactions with the human body, including immune cells. Various studies demonstrate the presence of TTV in the eye tissues of patients with different ocular pathologies, which indicates an association between TT virus and eye diseases. Therefore, the determination of the frequency of TTV persistence in the tissues and fluids of the eye is of interest.
The aim of the study was to determine the frequency of Torque teno virus occurrence in the lacrimal fluid in patients with cataract. The study included 60 patients (33 men and 27 women). The samples of stimulated tear fluid were taken from the conjunctival cavity. The detection of TTV DNA was carried out using real-time polymerase chain reaction.
TTV DNA was detected in 23 out of 60 (38.5%) tear fluid samples. The frequent detection of TTV in the tear fluid confirms its role in the ocular virome and formulates the hypothesis that the tear may be a route of transmission of TT infection. It may also indicate that the presence of TTV in the aqueous humor and vitreous body may be a risk factor for the development of various eye diseases. These results give rise to interest in further research in this direction.
