Vestnik VGMU. 2024;23(2):77-84.

Abstract.
Objectives. To characterize the main stages of the organizational work and holding an interuniversity Olympiad in the discipline “First Aid” with the participation of medical universities students of Belarus.
Material and methods. Retrospective analysis of the activities of higher medical education institutions in organizing and holding interuniversity Olympiads, the analysis of scientific, methodological and educational work of medical universities departments on the problems of introducing simulation learning technology into the educational process. The first-, the second- and the third-year students studying at the faculties of general medicine, pediatrics and dentistry took part in the interuniversity Olympiad. Knowledge diagnosing was carried out in the form of computer testing of the entire team with the possibility of discussion and collective choice of answers. Practical skills were assessed using objective structured clinical examination (hereinafter referred to as OSCE) technology.
Results. The interuniversity Olympiad was held in two stages: stage 1 (theoretical) – solving test tasks; stage 2 (practical) – passing OSCE stations. To diagnose theoretical knowledge the database of test tasks in the academic discipline “First Aid” was developed. The formation of OSCE stations was carried out on the basis of the tasks content performing which the participants of the Olympiad must demonstrate specific professional competencies of providing first aid to a victim in the imitated conditions. Seven station passports of the interuniversity Olympiad in the academic discipline “First Aid” for diagnosing the formation of practical skills were worked out. The developed diagnostic tools enabled objective knowledge and practical skills assessment of the Olympiad participants.
Conclusions. Two-stage holding of an interuniversity Olympiad in the academic discipline “First Aid” allows the Olympiad organizers to determine the level of mastering theoretical knowledge and formation of practical skills in its participants. The typology and content of the tasks make it possible for team members to demonstrate first aid skills in different situations under limited time conditions with varying numbers of participants at the station. The results of the study can be used in the activities of medical universities and colleges teachers in organizing subject Olympiads.
Keywords: OSCE, interuniversity Olympiad, competitive competencies, passport of the interuniversity Olympiad station in the academic discipline “First Aid”, VSMU.
