Habilitation of a patient with a cleft lip and palate
Minsk Regional Children’s Clinical Hospital, Minsk, Republic of Belarus

Vestnik VGMU. 2025;24(2):124-129.

Abstract.
A distinctive feature of the habilitation process is that the initial formation of the ability to do something in a person with a congenital cleft is not developed. The child is unable to develop the ability to swallow normally because of the morphologic defect i.e. the presence of cleft soft and hard palate.
The emphasis of this publication is on the act of swallowing as a key point influencing the morphology of the dentoalveolar system. When functioning, the tongue exerts both a mechanical influence by pushing against anatomical formations and by creating zones of increased or decreased pressure during the passage of the peristaltic wave, affecting soft and hard tissues. Therefore, this group of patients should be initially trained to swallow correctly (habilitate). Swallowing is a mechanical process aimed at pushing the contents of the oral cavity into the caudal parts of the digestive system.
A clinical case of treatment of a patient with a through unilateral cleft of the upper lip and palate, with mesial bite and tongue articulation disorder subjected to the action of a device manufactured according to the formula of utility model U 3016 (BY) is presented.
Keywords: habilitation, swallowing, pressure in the oral cavity.
