Vitebsk State Order of Peoples’ Friendship Medical University, Vitebsk, Republic of Belarus

Vestnik VGMU. 2022;21(4):100-113.

Abstract.
Objectives. To evaluate the social well-being of students of the educational institution “Vitebsk State Order of Peoples’ Friendship Medical University” (further in the text – VSMU) in order to make adjustments to the planning of educational and ideological work among the university staff.
Material and methods. In November 2021, we surveyed 301 students from all faculties of VSMU. The text of the questionnaire was written taking into account the recommendations of psychologists from the Chair of Psychology and Pedagogy. Spearman’s correlation analysis was used to identify the statistical relationship between the characteristics taken into account. In order to identify hidden patterns in the sample under study, cluster analysis was applied (the K-means method and tree clustering using the Ward method to combine objects into a cluster and the Euclidean distance between clustered objects).
Results. It has been shown that in general VSMU students are satisfied with the level of organization of the educational process, the professional qualities of teachers, living conditions in hostels, and the level of leisure-time activities. However, many students experience difficulties in communicating with teachers, dean’s office staff, employees of the department for tutorial work, dormitory teachers, as well as with other students, which affects the quality of the educational process. Family, the relationships with the relatives, health and, to a lesser extent, love prevailed among the priority life values of the majority of students, but professional self-realization, interesting work and wealth, as well as person-to-person communication, free time, personal independence, freedom to express and defend one’s opinion didn’t belong to such values (or belonged to it to a much lesser extent). In addition, a significant part of students do not consider professionalism, economic independence and business acumen as mandatory qualities of modern youth.
Conclusions. Actualization of informational and communicational pedagogical technologies is needed, together with the use of active forms and methods in the educational process, as well as the targeted psychological support and counseling of students on teaching communication skills and the ability to find a common language both with peers and with teachers, and also with representatives of the university authorities. The need for continuous education of student youth is shown. The existing uneven formation of stable worldviews and value orientations should be taken into account when planning, organizing and providing the content for educational activities with students, as well as in the course of their involvement in the work of student self-government bodies.
