Abstract.
Objectives. To examine the conflict behavior strategies among the students of the Faculty of General Medicine of VSMU.
Material and methods. The study enrolled 345 students of the Faculty of General Medicine, including 127 second-year students (91 females and 36 males) and 218 sixth-year students (173 females and 45 males).
The Thomas-Kilmann Test (adapted by N.V. Grishina) was used to examine conflict behavior strategies.
Results. The strategic choices of the second-year medical students in conflict situations indicate that they predominantly use feminine traits. The second and sixth-year medical students are predisposed to resolve disagreements through mutual concessions and compliance with their own interests while jointly seeking a solution that satisfies both parties. The second and sixth-year female students use more effective conflict management strategies.
The shift from effective conflict management strategies (2nd and 6th grade students) to ineffective ones (6th grade students) may be due, on the one hand, to the challenging nature of higher medical education and, on the other, to the influence of internet risks on student behavior.
The controversial nature of possible indicators dynamics in a comparative gender analysis of the 2nd and 6th year students may be linked to the influence of students’ personality traits, the social status of those involved in conflicts, and the causes and resolutions of a conflict.
Conclusions. The results of the study of conflict management strategies can be used in the work of social, pedagogical, and psychological services, as well as by tutors and student group supervisors.
