Abstract.
Objectives. To analyze effectiveness of psychological and pedagogical conditions for developing communicative competencies in medical students.
Material and methods. Theoretical, empirical methods (questionnaire, cross-sectional method), methods of mathematical statistics (descriptive statistics, one-way analysis of variance ANOVA). The study involved 360 sixth-year students of the General Medicine and Pediatrics Faculties of Izhevsk State Medical University of the MOH of the Russian Federation. The degree of development of communicative competencies was determined through self-assessment of abilities and readiness for communication in professional activities.
Results. Active, interactive teaching methods, teacher’s empathy, and prior familiarity with the instructor were established to be crucial for the acquisition and application of acquired knowledge and skills during or after the completion of the communicative skills training course. Interactive methods and teacher’s empathy were found to be significant for medical students’ subsequent desire and intention to develop communicative skills. The quality of lectures was found to have no impact on the development of communicative skills in senior medical students.
Conclusions. The authors conclude that empathy on the part of the instructor and the use of cognitive-oriented, activity-oriented, and student-centered teaching methods are key psychological and pedagogical factors in the development of communicative skills in medical students. Further study of how individual student characteristics influence the development of their communicative skills is a promising prospect. The results of the study may be useful and interesting to students, teachers, and psychological services of medical universities.
