Suicidal behaviour of adolescents in the city of Vitebsk and Vitebsk region

Abstract.
Republican data on suicides may have limited applicability while designing and monitoring local prevention strategies, as between various regions of the country often there are significant demographic, economic, or cultural differences. It is important to determine the extent to which the local characteristics of suicide differ from the national picture. In this connection the following purpose was selected: to identify ways, circumstances, motives of suicides and suicidal attempts committed by teen-agers of Vitebsk and Vitebsk region with a view to further elaborate preventive measures for this region. The analysis of medical records concerning parasuicides and suicides in the adolescent population of the city of Vitebsk and Vitebsk region in dynamics during 3 years (from 2010 to 2012) was made. Data on 139 individuals who committed suicide attempts according to the department of neuroses in Vitebsk clinical center of psychiatry and narcology were analyzed, the average age of the study participants was 16,3 years. 24 certificates of forensic medicine experts’ examination and corpses registers containing data on suicides in Vitebsk regional pathoanatomical bureau were analyzed, the mean age of the study participants made up 16,8 years. The results of this study allowed to identify the main risk factors, motives, peculiarities of parasuicides and suicides in adolescence. The obtained information can be used as a guide for the development and implementation of programs for the prevention of suicidal behaviour among patients of psychiatric and narcological service, and among the teen-age population in general.
