The influence of exhaust gases of internal-combustion engines on the myeloperoxidase release by leukocytes in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases

Abstract.
Objectives. To develop and test a method of diagnosing of hypersensitivity to exhaust gases of internal-combustion engines in chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases by evaluating the myeloperoxidase (MPO) release from neutrophils.
Material and methods. The patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) (n=37; age 49 (42; 64 years)) and patients with allergic bronchial asthma (BA) (n=42; age 47 (39; 56 years) were included in the study. The control group consisted of healthy donors without any respiratory pathology (n=26, age 44 (35; 57 years)). For diagnosing the reaction of the myeloperoxidase release from blood leukocytes after their incubation with the solution of exhaust gases of internal-combustion engines was used. Blood for the study of patients was taken from the peripheral vein.
Results. The MPO release from neutrophils occurred after the incubation of leukocytes of COPD and BA patients with the toxicant solution. In patients with asthma the reaction was positive in 27 cases. In patients with COPD the reaction was positive in 24 cases. In the control group the reaction was positive in 10 donors.
Conclusions. The developed method enables the evaluation of neutrophil hypersensitivity to toxicants in COPD and asthma. It allows to determine the sensitization of leukocytes to toxicants and may serve as one of the diagnostic criteria of these diseases.
